I’m now back in Northern Norway but this time in a town called Kirkenes – which is about 15km from the border of Russia. I’ve taken another musher job at the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. It’s pretty much the same type of work as the one in Tromsø but this one has a few more dogs (around 140). We’ve currently got two dog yards set up; one at the Snowhotel (~50 dogs), which is about 10 minutes drive from the center of town. The other is located in Pasvik – a valley about 100km south of Kirkenes. This will be the main training camp in the autumn and it currently houses about 90 dogs (in addition to roughly 30 bears roaming around the valley area). Once autumn rolls around all the dogs will be moved here and the ATV training will begin!
During the summer time it’s quite relaxed at the camp: we let the dogs run around and socialize with each other, clean up & maintain the camp as well as taking saunas in the midnight sun most evenings. At the Snowhotel dog yard we’ve got puppies (new ones to be born shortly!) and we also provide husky hikes up and around the local mountains.
The majority of the pictures below are from our camp at Pasvik with a couple from Kirkenes itself.
Enjoy!
